Reactivating the Bioregion

Performing and celebrating the bioregion as a living community
Client: Maison Forte
Date: Mars 2021

How to reactivate the bioregion as a relevant scale for ecological transition? This action-research in the Pays de Serres explores bioregionalism as a territorial mobilization strategy, articulating cultural and ecological continuities. Conducted within a research residency supported by the La Maison Forte third-place, it embraces Matthias Rollot's idea that "the issue is not knowing if bioregions exist, but if bioregions can exist - and whether this is desirable or not." Building on ancient French "pays," we develop a territorial animation methodology that transforms the concept's complexity into desirable collective imaginaries. The project cultivates bioregional agency through contemporary rituals, creating conditions for governance adapted to climate challenges and intercommunity collaboration. This exploration of the Pays de Serres' potential bioregion proposes to make this territorial scale visible through animations that celebrate and perform the territory's living community.
